Gintama may be mostly episodic but the long standing knowledge of character relationships is essential to the comedy and weight of the actual story arcs. Gintama in my opinion is good. There isnt really much to catch up to. I was really wondering if gintama was special enough that even someone who hates lengthy anime could love it and if its something that is special and memorable compared to any others.

And yes youll miss out on what the character relationships are as well as being clueless once the serious arcs start popping up.
